The Department of Civil Engineering at Hefei University of Technology has a history of more than 70 years and a strong academic tradition. It originated from the Civil Engineering Department of the Anhui Provincial Bengbu Senior Industrial Vocational School, established in 1945. It was one of the first three majors founded at Hefei University of Technology.

Currently, the department offers an undergraduate program in Civil Engineering (with a focus on construction engineering), master's degree programs in Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, and a master's degree program in Civil Engineering and Construction. Additionally, the department offers doctoral programs in Structural Engineering and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, along with a post-doctoral research station in Civil Engineering. Structural Engineering is recognized as a key discipline in Anhui Province.

The Civil Engineering program is designated as a national-level specialty, and it was one of the first pilot programs for the Outstanding Engineer Education Training Plan in China. The department has successfully passed national evaluations for Civil Engineering education in 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012.

Each year, the Department of Civil Engineering admits around 200 undergraduate students majoring in Civil Engineering (construction and engineering management), approximately 100 master's students, and 10 master's students in Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering. Students come from thirty different provinces and regions across China, with high academic qualifications and entrance examination scores.

The department maintains high academic standards, emphasizing the development of its faculty, particularly young teachers. The department currently has 35 full-time faculty members, including 7 professors, 20 associate professors, and 8 lecturers. Among them, there is 1 recipient of the New Century Talents Project of the Ministry of Education and 1 recipient of the Huangshan Young Scholars. Faculty members hold various qualifications, including 12 National Registered Structural Engineers, 5 National Registered Supervision Engineers, and Cost Engineers.

The department follows the principles of solid foundation, wide scope, innovation, and high quality to educate well-rounded, composite talents who excel in both theory and practice. The department emphasizes undergraduate education and has established a complete teaching system. The curriculum consists of general education courses, basic discipline courses, compulsory major courses, elective major courses, and practical components. The department has also cultivated a national-level quality course called Seismic Design of Engineering Structures. Since 2013, the Civil Engineering program has implemented the Outstanding Engineer Education Training Plan, focusing on enhancing students' practical skills, fostering innovative thinking, and offering multiple practical components, including learning in construction and design companies, internships, experimental operations, and course design. Over the years, students have achieved impressive results in various national and regional structural design competitions.

The department combines teaching and research by relying on the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Structures and Materials. Faculty members lead more than 100 research projects, including major programs funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, research projects of the Ministry of Education's New Century Talents Program, postdoctoral programs, and Anhui Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects. The department also engages in engineering practice and social services, including engineering consulting, design, supervision, testing, and training. Representative projects include Hefei New Bridge Airport, Hefei Binhu Convention and Exhibition Center, Ma'anshan Yangtze River Bridge, the Nanfeihe Extra-Large Steel Bridge for South Hefei Rail Hub, the Hefei Ferry Battle Memorial Hall, Chizhou Sports Arena, Huangshan Road Recycling, and Anhui Schoolhouse Assessment and Reinforcement.

For more than 70 years, the Department of Civil Engineering has educated and supplied the nation with numerous highly skilled civil engineering professionals. Many outstanding alumni have become leaders and core personnel in government agencies, universities, design institutes, and enterprises. They have undertaken and completed numerous major and key engineering projects and research programs, contributing significantly to the revitalization of China's construction industry.
