Department of Municipal Engineering

In 1987, Hefei University of Technology established the major in Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, and in 1998, the Department of Municipal Engineering was founded in response to the needs of development. In recent years, with the joint efforts of the faculty and students, the Department of Municipal Engineering has made significant achievements in discipline development:

In 2018, it passed a professional assessment and certification by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, with a validity period of 6 years.

In 2019, it was designated as an Engineering Laboratory in Anhui Province.

In 2021, it was approved as a National First-class Undergraduate Program.

As of the end of July 2021, the department had 17 full-time faculty members, including 6 with professor or equivalent senior titles, 5 with associate professor or equivalent titles, and 6 with lecturer or intermediate titles. Among them, there are 4 doctoral supervisors and 12 master's supervisors. The department's faculty is well-qualified, and it is equipped with complete teaching and experimental facilities, including laboratories for water quality analysis, environmental chemical analysis, hydraulic modeling, and more.

Regarding teaching, the department is responsible for fundamental and specialized courses for the Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering program, as well as courses in professional development. It also provides instruction for students majoring in civil engineering and urban and rural planning. The department offers courses such as Introduction to the Profession, Hydraulics, Inorganic and Water Analytical Chemistry, Water Treatment Biology, Water Pumps and Pump Stations, Water Supply and Drainage Network Systems, Building Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, Water Quality Engineering (I and II), Hydrology and Hydrogeology, Fundamentals of Civil Engineering, Water Resource Utilization and Protection, Water Supply and Drainage Engineering Construction, Water Engineering Economics, Basics of Water Process Equipment, Water Supply and Drainage Instrument Control and Simulation, and Water Supply and Drainage Engineering Structures. The department also oversees internships, social practices, production internships, course design, graduation internships, and thesis projects, cultivating outstanding engineering and technical professionals in the field of water supply and drainage.

The primary research directions of the Department of Municipal Engineering include:

1. Water Quality Assurance Theory and Technology: Comprehensive river and lake water ecological environment management, drinking water disinfection theory, water quality assurance technology, artificial wetlands, and ecological restoration technology.

2. Wastewater Treatment and Resource Utilization Technology: Development and industrialization of new technologies for wastewater treatment, in-depth treatment and reuse technology for industrial wastewater, rural domestic sewage and aquaculture wastewater treatment technology, migration and transformation mechanisms of trace pollutants in water, rainwater and reclaimed water utilization in buildings and communities, sewage sludge and waste energy utilization technology.

3. Optimization of Supply and Drainage Network Models and Water Quality Simulation Analysis: Urban water supply and drainage engineering planning and operation management, river water environment and water quality simulation, control of microbial safety risks in drinking water, smart pipeline network planning and numerical simulation analysis, urban flood mitigation, and sponge city optimization design theory and methods.

The Department of Municipal Engineering focuses on the integration of industry, academia, and research. It has undertaken various national key research and development projects, national water-related projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects, Anhui Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects, and research tasks at the provincial and ministerial levels. It has received several awards for scientific and technological progress at the provincial and ministerial levels, as well as national awards from first-tier academic societies.

This discipline leverages platforms such as the Anhui Province Rural Water Environmental Management and Water Resource Utilization Engineering Laboratory and strives to become a high-level, high-quality innovation and talent cultivation base for China's water supply and drainage industry. It aims to have distinctive advantages among similar disciplines in China, contributing significantly to education, science, construction, and management in areas related to urban and rural public infrastructure and environmental protection.
