On the afternoon of August 28, 2025, Professor Yogarajah ELAKNESWARAN from the Department of Sustainable Resources Engineering at Hokkaido University, Japan, was invited to our university for an academic exchange and delivered a report titled "Geopolymer for Radionuclide Immobilization." The report was chaired by Professor GUO Binglin of the College of Civil Engineering and attracted active participation from faculty and students in related fields. The event was hosted by the College of Civil Engineering at Hefei University of Technology (HFUT).
During the report, Professor ELAKNESWARAN systematically explained the environmental challenges within the context of nuclear energy development, focusing on the latest research progress of metakaolin-based geopolymers in radionuclide immobilization. Combining experimental results, he revealed the adsorption behavior of alkali-activated systems toward cationic and anionic radionuclides. He further proposed effective methods such as boron doping to enhance neutron capture capacity and phosphate activation to improve anion immobilization performance, demonstrating the significant potential of material customization in enhancing environmental safety.
During the exchange session, Professor ELAKNESWARAN engaged in in-depth discussions with faculty and students on topics such as the solidification mechanism of geopolymers, the immobilization characteristics of organic compounds, and the safe disposal of radioactive waste. Participants expressed that the report was both cutting-edge and profound, broadening their academic horizons in the fields of radionuclide immobilization and green building materials.
This report not only expanded the academic perspectives of faculty and students but also established an important exchange platform for research and cooperation in the fields of green building materials and radioactive waste management at our university.
