On July 19, 2024, Professor Raziyeh Farmani, Industrial Fellow of the Royal Society and professor at the University of Exeter, was invited to the College of Civil Engineering for an academic exchange and delivered a lecture titled "Smart Water Distribution System." Faculty members and students from the College of Civil Engineering attended the seminar.
During the lecture, Professor Raziyeh Farmani began with global issues such as water scarcity and climate change to highlight the key technical challenges currently faced in water resource management and the operation and maintenance of water distribution networks. She explained her research team's latest progress in areas such as water asset management, leakage control, and self-healing pipelines. Additionally, Professor Raziyeh Farmani introduced the primary research fields and postgraduate recruitment policies of the University of Exeter. Participating students and faculty actively engaged in the session, holding in-depth discussions with Professor Raziyeh Farmani on intermittent water supply and flood management.
After the meeting, the Dean of the Department of Municipal Engineering accompanied Professor Raziyeh Farmani on a visit to the collaborative partner, Shunyu Water Group. They engaged in profound discussions regarding industry-university-research cooperation and international collaboration in the fields of intelligent water supply network research and application.
This academic exchange has promoted scientific research cooperation between the College of Civil Engineering and the University of Exeter in fields such as intermittent water supply, urban-rural integrated water supply, and intelligent water supply equipment.
[Speaker Profile]:
Raziyeh Farmani is a professor of Water Engineering at the University of Exeter, an Industrial Fellow of the Royal Society (2019-2022), chair of the International Water Association (IWA) Intermittent Water Supply Specialist Group, and director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Water Informatics: Science and Engineering (WISE-CDT). She specializes in urban water system modeling, asset management, water resource management, multi-objective optimization, uncertainty and risk assessment, and decision support. Her research interests include artificial intelligence and data mining and their applications in the real-time control of smart water systems, integrated asset management (including leakage management, energy management, sustainability and resilience issues, and modeling of asset failure and deterioration), intermittent water supply systems, Bayesian networks, and participatory integrated assessments under uncertainty.
