On October 11, 2025, Professor ZHAN Xinmin of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Galway, who also serves as an adjunct professor at our university, was elected as a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering (IAE). This prestigious honor is a high recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of engineering science and technology, and we extend our warmest congratulations to Professor ZHAN.

The Irish Academy of Engineering is the highest academic honor institution in the Irish engineering community, and the title of Fellow is awarded to experts and scholars who have achieved distinguished accomplishments in engineering and made a significant impact on society. The election of Professor ZHAN Xinmin not only reflects his high academic standing but also highlights the international influence of his research achievements.

Professor ZHAN Xinmin is currently a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Galway. He has long been engaged in research on environmental engineering and sustainable resource utilization, covering fields such as wastewater treatment, waste management and resource recovery, greenhouse gas emission reduction, circular economy, and environmental sustainability. He has achieved a series of internationally leading results in agricultural waste management, wastewater treatment, low-carbon technology, and environmental systems engineering. He has chaired numerous EU and Irish national research projects and published more than 200 papers in high-level international journals. His achievements possess extensive academic influence and practical value, having been referenced and adopted multiple times by relevant Irish authorities in formulating policies and standards.

As an adjunct professor of our university, Professor ZHAN Xinmin maintains long-term and close academic collaboration with us. He has been invited many times to visit and deliver insightful lectures on academic frontiers for the faculty and students of the College of Civil Engineering, sharing the latest research progress and valuable experience of his team in the field of environmental engineering. The collaboration with Professor ZHAN has not only broadened the international academic horizons of our faculty and students but also provided strong support for the disciplinary development of the College of Civil Engineering. The election of Professor ZHAN Xinmin as a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering is a significant outcome of our college’s international academic exchange and cooperation, and it will further promote deep international collaboration between the College of Civil Engineering and the Irish Academy of Engineering.
