The Department of Road & Bridge Engineering and Underground Engineering at Hefei University of Technology has a nearly 40-year history, founded in 1984 as the Highway and Urban Road Engineering program. It became an independent department in 2004 and was renamed in 2021. The department has 40 full-time faculty members, including 8 professors, 18 associate professors, and 14 lecturers, with 7 Ph.D. advisors and 23 master's advisors. The department offers core courses in Road and Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, and Civil Engineering, covering subjects like Structural Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Road and Pavement Engineering, Bridge Engineering, and Foundation Engineering. It has contributed to numerous textbooks and educational resources.

Key research areas include bridge structure health monitoring, seismic theory and vibration control for bridges, road material performance and recycling, pavement design, geotechnical modeling, and underground structure design. The department emphasizes the integration of industry, academia, and research, undertaking national and provincial-level projects, and has received several awards for scientific and technological progress. The department supports platforms like the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Structures and Materials, focusing on transportation infrastructure development and the safety of civil engineering structures.
