The Department of Municipal Engineering at Hefei University of Technology, established in 1987, made significant strides in recent years. It passed professional certification by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2018, was designated as an Engineering Laboratory in Anhui Province in 2019, and in 2021, became a National First-class Undergraduate Program.

The department has 17 full-time faculty members, including 6 professors, 5 associate professors, and 6 lecturers, with 4 doctoral supervisors and 12 master's supervisors. It offers a range of courses related to Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, such as Hydraulics, Water Quality Engineering, Water Supply and Drainage Network Systems, and Water Engineering Economics.

Key research areas include:

1. Water Quality Assurance: River and lake ecological management, drinking water disinfection, artificial wetlands, and ecological restoration.

2. Wastewater Treatment and Resource Utilization: New wastewater treatment technologies, reuse of industrial and domestic sewage, and resource recovery.

3. Water Supply and Drainage Network Optimization: Urban water network planning, water quality simulation, microbial safety, flood mitigation, and sponge city design.

The department integrates industry, academia, and research, undertaking national and provincial-level projects. It has received several awards for scientific and technological progress and is supported by platforms like the Anhui Province Rural Water Environmental Management and Water Resource Utilization Engineering Laboratory. Its goal is to become a leading innovation hub in China’s water supply and drainage sector.
